2017 – 2018
HOUSE 3 is a 340 square meter architectural installation, constructed in the KANAL Centre Pompidou in Brussels, Belgium.
The project is based on an experimental format for collaborative design and construction conceived by ALICE (Atelier de la Conception de l’Espace) —a laboratory of EPFL led by Dieter Dietz.
Erected in a little over 15 days, the project involved 150 first-year students, who prefabricated all the built elements of the installation in Lausanne and transported them across Europe in three shipping trucks to Belgium, where they unloaded and re-assembled them as a full-size ephemeral structure.
Devoted to social and cultural events, the museum installation is not a homogenous architecture, but rather, the result of various different contributions. Each offers an approach to spatial appropriation by many voices, in a dialogical process that questions the quality of organised event spaces in view of new museums typologies. In reference to Richard Sennett’s recent book “Together”, strong emphasis is given to the notion of collectivity and the negotiation of space of social difference. The project works as a pedagogical tool that materialises these topics in the design-build process, and in its physical and spatial parameters.
The previous year’s experiment, HOUSE 2, was the configuration of an archetypal house collectively built in an urban condition: under a train bridge installation in Zurich, by students for a neighbourhood community and a school body (ZHdK). The rooms of HOUSE 2 were engaged primarily in forming a series of exterior relations: HOUSE 3 has evolved from this premise, turning inwards, setting itself in relation to the museum and its visitors – temporary inhabitants and becoming a communal place of cultural activities.
In order to foster cultural engagement, the CIVA, in close collaboration with ALICE, has jointly programmed a series of events for the fall 2018 to take place in the context of the installation. These include guided tours, lectures, performances, symposia, student critiques and exhibitions, and a series of children’s ateliers.
HOUSE3 has been completed at the end of May 2018 and will be open until June 2019.
